Facts About Prostate Health

For men, especially those over 45, prostate problems often put a damper on what should be their "golden years"; and it's far more common than previously thought.  According to numerous studies, more than half of all men over 50 years of age, suffer from enlarged prostate.  As men age, up to 80% will suffer from uncomfortable symptoms that include urination difficulties, increased frequency and urgency of urination, bouts with sleep-disturbing nighttime urination and lower backache.

Men's Formula 800+ Prostate Support incorporates an effective combination of herbs, minerals and essential fatty acids.  This formula brings together some of the best known ingredients that provide nutritional support for prostate health.*  These include saw palmetto extract, stinging nettle, zinc, beta sitosterol, and Pygeum africanum extract which help increase urine flow.*

Ingredient Highlights

Saw Palmetto Berry Extract (Serenoa repens)

From a small tropical palm tree grown in Florida, saw palmetto berries have been used for centuries by Native Americans.  Saw palmetto contains liposterolic fatty acids, including beta sitosterol, which help increase urine flow.*  It has been widely used as an extract in Europe for over 20 years as a botanical medicine. Recommended  amount is 160 mg to 320 mg daily.

Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica L.)

A common "weed" which grows all over the world, stinging nettle has a long history of medicinal use to increase urine flow*.  Recommended amount is 150 mg to 300 mg daily.

Golden Flax Oil

Flax oil is one of nature's richest plant sources of the Omega 3 essential fatty acid, alpha linolenic acid (ALA).  Flax oil has traditionally been recommended for men's health care. ALA can be partially converted to EPA and DHA - the fatty acids in fish.  Recommended amount is 1,000 mg to 2,000 mg daily.

Pygeum africanum

A tree belonging to the rose family, Pygeum grows in Africa.  Our active extract is concentrated 130:1.  Lipophilic sterols, including beta sitosterol and sitosterone, are obtained from the bark of this tall evergreen.  The extract also contains unique fatty acids which are biologically active.  These ingredients influence prostaglandin synthesis to help control damaging inflammation.*  Studies do not prove exactly how Pygeum helps  prostate health, but one suggestion is that Pygeum decreases androgen levels resulting in less prostate exposure to other hormones.*  Other components in Pygeum help prevent swelling of soft tissue*.  Recommended amount is 50 mg to 100 mg daily.

Beta Sitosterol

Beta sitosterol is a mixture of phytosterols, or plant hormones, found in soy beans.  In a double-blinded study, beta sitosterol increased urine flow and decreased residual urine volume significantly.* Researchers suggested that beta sitosterol functions to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis, reducing the damaging effects of inflammation.*  Recommended amount is 20 mg daily.

Zinc and Copper

Zinc and copper are two essential minerals that are needed together and are often lacking in the American diet.  Zinc is concentrated in the prostate gland and is a major constituent of seminal fluid.  Mild zinc deficiency can lower sperm count.*  Recommended amount is 10 mg to 60 mg daily.  Copper is added to balance the zinc and prevent a copper deficiency.
